Dragon Quest 6

Okay, my first review was about an unknown game but this time don't be deceived. This review is about Enix's best-selling series, Dragon Quest. Well... actually, only one game of the series, the 6th one. Well let's get started shall we?

Let's start with the good points shall we?

First, the graphics are very good but seeing it's a SNES game, who actually care about graphics? Well to make it in a simple sentence, the graphics looks a bit like those of Earthbound (Mother 2) but enhanced a little bit. The background effects are astounding, I've never seen anything like them before. And the enemies looks very good and their attacks are fully animated (since it's a First-Person Battle System). I just love the way how the Furrats rolls and slam on you.

Second, the plot is addicting and original. Beside for FF3/FF6j, I think it's the best plot of the whole RPG industry, including the new games. You start seeing a weird intro (showing something near 40% of the game I think, since you see the last boss but he whups you in no time, without even fighting). And then you are transported to the village where you live, and are asked to go take up a "spirit crown" for the local festival. And you eventually end up tied up in fighting against the evil schemes of an evil demon lord. Hey, I never saw any RPGs that made you start as someone who actually didn't want to absolutely fight and become a hero.

Third, the level up curve is very well balanced, now I put this as a good point because it boosts the challenge of the game. You won't end up getting your ass kicked when you're equipped with the latest equipment and you're 2 levels lower than the average for the area you're in. The monsters aren't extremely strong all the time, sure there's some monsters that you need to fight head on while you're like 5 levels under the normal. But you usually face those while they are alone (like the Dark Hobbit in the well of the castle town), and with the good strategy you can take them out in less than 5 minutes. The challenge of fights isn't unbeatable in that game, it's just fun since it's balanced.

Fourth, the musics and the sounds are just so sweet! Just like every other DQ games, the music kicks and is very fitting to the game's mood. Every single songs always fit in the right place, and none of them is misplaced. Even FF3 can't beat DQ6's music.

Alright, now for the bad points

The battle system might not please everyone. Like every Dragon Quest games, the battle system is in first-person. Personally, I don't really care about it, but others might hate the battle system with a passion. This is just a matter of opinion I guess.

Sometimes you need to wait for a long time in order that something happens. Yes, you really wait a long time. I've waited like 15 minutes for the bells to chime in a village so I could advance in the quest. Maybe I just didn't know what to do and made them chime by talking to someone (I don't understand kanjis, thus I can't know what they say) but some people might not like to wait.

Sometimes the encounter rate is very high. Not that it causes a problem since as I said, the battle are very balanced when you're even 1 or 2 levels under the average. But in some areas, you fight too many monsters and just want to find a church so you can save as soon as possible.

The info doesn't show how many EXP you need to level up. Some people might not care about it, but I don't like to go back to the church all the time to see how many EXP I need. Well, I don't go back to the church all the time, each time I start playing again I look up how many EXP I need. But some people just like to see how many exact XP they need to level up. Thus, they might get tired to go back to a town all the time.

So Dragon Quest 6 is a good game, not the best in Enix's legendary series but maybe one of the best of them. But that's always a matter of opinions.
